Vet put my dog on metronidazole&canned food, took stool sample today and it was clean. now she had a few watery I took the stool sample today to the SPCA where I work and they found nothing at all. tonight she was out and I saw a few little squirts on the driveway. She was starting to have formed stools but then this happened. I believe it's nothing, I hope. Help!
Vet Tech replied: "The Metronidazole will kick anything out of her system... just give it time!"
Power of the Rat Terrier replied: "I always like to confirm things like this so I suggest taking her to another vet and see what they say but if you feel confident in this then I would just give her some canned pumpkin to re firm her stool or just give the medicine a little extra time to see if anything happens"
vet2be10 replied: "No, the medication is to harden the stool and clean everything out. The squirts are normal at first. Just keep giving the medication as suggested and in a couple of days everything will be fine!"
JanelleRVT replied: "If it keeps continuing after the medication is done then your dog should have some more diagnostic tests done to see if there is something else going on."
Tolak replied: "Metro is for internal protizoans, go the plain canned pumpkin route to firm up stools."
Has anyone taken metronidazole? My doctor prescribed metronidazole for me. I'm taking it to see if post-operation IBS is causing my stomach problems. I had my appendix out in May of 2008. It is prescribed that I take it 3 times daily, with food, for 10 days. I'm sick of it already.
It is making my stomach feel icky at night. Did you experience this also. I was told not to drink any alcohol and honestly, my stomach has been so upset lately, I don't even think about drinking - even before I was taking this.
mannon is broke! replied: "Yes, and I hated it, but I stuck with it, and it is one of the main drugs of choice for treating what you (may) have.
For what it's worth, don't drink alcohol when you are taking it- it can act like antabuse and make you really sick and very miserable- even more than you are now."
Can you mix metronidazole and clavamox together with food for your cat? My cat was prescribed liquid metronidazole and clavamox, which she is none to keen on taking via syringe. Last night I tried mixing it with some food, but she had no interest so I put the mixture into the fridge. I want to know if it's safe for me to try to give it to her this morning (12 hours later) after it's been sitting overnight. I don't know if any chemical reactions might have occurred with the two meds being together for so long.
This is an ASAP needed response, so please share if you know!
I didn't feed her the mixture from last night - didn't feel OK about it. I had spoken to my vet's office yesterday who said that it would be OK to mix them with food. Of course she still has no interest in that either...
She's eaten some of the food mixture - I've added a bit more to weaken the medicine taste. But I'll make sure to give the next doses via syringe. Hopefully she finishes the food we've got out already!
Thanks.
Audra replied: "I would call your local pharmacy and just ask the pharmacist. They will be more than happy to assist you. The fact you put in the fridge should be fine, but I would certainly ring the pharmacy before you give it to her. Good luck"
Ken S replied: "I don't think there is any problem with the 2 being mixed together
For some cats, the antibiotic clavamox has been known to curb appetite so keep an eye on it
I know it is not this easy but hope this helps"
Brian replied: "CALL THE VET THEY HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS! RIGHT NOW! IT COULD BE VERY HARMFUL! I AM A VET!"
dizzyg replied: "They won't react with each other. However, metronidazole (even when flavored) is very bitter tasting. Cats don't particularly love the taste of clavamox either. It is unlikely that your cat will eat the food with the meds mixed in.
When usiing the syringe method, wrap the cat in a towel so just the head sticks out. Then have someone hold the cat "like a baby" on its back. The head is sort of upside down at this point so you can stick the meds into the mouth. Don't worry about him aspirating, cats have a very strong gag reflex.
Good luck"
J C replied: "While it's technically OK to mix them with food, it's really a bad idea. Metro is an especially foul tasting medication. By putting it in their food you're just making them suspicious of their food. At best, they eat around it. At worst, they refuse to eat it. And you have no idea if you've actually gotten the medication into them or not!
All you're doing at this point is wasting food and medicine. Your best bet is really just going back to giving it to her via the syringe, and counting the days until it's done."
Angelfish tries to eat but spits out food, no poo, using Metronidazole & Epsom Salt, Please help!? Silver pearlscale veil angelfish 4" body size. I have had him for 8 months. 60 gallon heavily planted tank. 25 Cardinals, 2 other angelfish, albino pearlscale, koi pearlscale, body size 2" these are what I have left from 5 new ones I got about two weeks apart 2 or 3 months ago. I did QT them all. The dead ones stopped eating. Now my beautiful big boy cannot eat and spits out food. He was not getting any food for about 1 week. I have him in a 5 gal. bare QT. Temp 86F Treating daily 20mg/gal metronidazole by Seachem and 11/2 teaspoon Espom salt daily with a 50% water change after once a day feed of bloodworms sprinkled with Metro. I have been doing this for 7 days now. He wants to eat, begging for food. He has been able to eat some bloodworms but fights to get them down and it takes an hour. He only wants bloodworms and I don't want to lose him. He also has not pooped. Do I just keep medicating and using the epsom salt? Using best info from member Tolak. Please need more help!
Hello H replied: "That is how fish eat there food i have angel fish and i was worried but that is how they eat it is wierd i know
Hope This Helps

david r replied: "yeah ive had angelfish before and i noticed that they spit out theyre food when they eat it but thats just the way they eat im sure hell be fine"
Tolak replied: "Get that temperature up into the low 90's, as long as he is in a tank by himself. Bring the dose up to 40mg/gallon metro.
Brine shrimp is a better option than bloodworms, the brine shrimp contains a higher percentage of roughage, this helps keep their digestive tract moving smoothly. Bloodworms are a high protein food that tend to constipate, this is not what you want in this situation.

METALLIC MOUTH!!! How long before the metal taste goes away after taking Metronidazole? It's been a week!? I have had this awful, awful metal taste in my mouth for over a week after taking the prescription drug Metronidazole. It's the worst medication I've ever taken and would never take it again. The worst part is that I've been off of it for over a week and can't get rid of this metal taste in my mouth. Everything tastes terrible, including all of my favorite foods. I'm frickin miserable. Any insight, Please????
tinasphynx replied: "I had for approximately a week and a half after taking metro last year. I couldnt get rid of it entirely either but what I found that helped the best was cinnamon candy - hard cinnamon candy.
I dont EVER want to take it again... I wouldnt wish that on my worst enemy."
LX replied: "3 WEEKS TOPS, EAT SOMETHING SWEET, IT HELPS OR PUT VANILLA ESSENCE IN YOUR DRINK IT REALLY TAKES AWAY THE HORRIBLE METAL TASTE."
what vitamins can i take or what foods can i eat to prevent bacterial vaginal infections? i have been getting bv for the past few months and i am given metronidazole. which then gives me yeast infections but doesnt cure my bv.
Sloopy D replied: "There is a product that is sold over the counter called RePhresh. It's a gel, or cream, that is inserted vaginally like the metrogel. What the RePhresh does is help balance your pH...which is why you keep getting infections. If you use this product as directed..it should really help to prevent the BV from returning so rapidly. Your doctor may have samples of this, in case you want to call and ask. :)"
? replied: "The foods you eat have nothing to do with getting/preventing bacterial vaginosis. Avoid having multiple sex partners and douching.
Also a compromised amune system. Those are known causes of BV."
stephie87_06 replied: "Yogurt with active cultures will help prevent yeast infections!"
Giving Metronidazole to Ferrets? Ok, so I have two sick ferrets and the vet gave them Metronidazole.....of all drugs. My babies won't eat canned food, baby food or chicken soup. So, I can't hide the icky meds in that. I tried Ferretone and it didn't hide the taste of the meds. I am looking for some more ideas. I had to force them to take the pill tonight and my arm and hand got tore up in the process.
Please only serious responses.
I am going to leave this open in hopes to find other ideas to hide meds in, but I wanted to comment on the rabbit owners posts.
Sweets are very bad for ferrets, so I can't use that as an option. They really do love sweets, but I would rather not cause another problem while trying to solve one.
However, I am going to ask the vet if the pills can be made into a liquid. I have to go there tomorrow anyways.
Thanks for the posts.
Supermom replied: "I'm sorry to hear that you are having such a problem with this. Your ferrets can smell and taste the difference in the food when you put the meds in so force is really the best way. In handling a animal like that wrap your ferret in a towel and try to get someone else to hold it. This will save you the time and pain. If you want to be extra careful then wear long sleeve and gloves as well. This will help a lot. I really hope you get your answer soon and I hope you babies get better."
Caren replied: "Ask your vet if you can crush the metronidazole and put it in Ensure, I know bunnies love it that way. Strawberry flavor of course. I live in Hawaii so we dont have ferrets but just check with your vet about the ensure. I hope this helps!"
Emily D replied: "My rabbits were given some really nasty meds before and I mixed them in apple sauce. One liked it but the other didn't. We mixed his in yogurt. Try to find something sweet that your babies like and see if they will take their meds mixed in it. It might take some experimenting, but hopefully you will find something that works. Another thing that might work that my vet mixes medicine with is liquid pina colada mix-- no alcohol though."
JR replied: "YEah that's got to be as bad as giving meds to a cat.
I would suggest cheese.
If you do have to force I would get a pill releaser that is on a long plastic tube and you stick it in their mouth and push a button once it is in the back of their throat. Once it is released hold the snout closed and rub the throat gently. I would also be sure to wrap all but the head in a towel for your own protection."
Huh? replied: "Giving Metronidazole isn't any harder than any other meds, or easier.
My oldest female just came off four different meds, Metro being one of them. I'm surprised to hear that your vet gave you pills for a ferret. Mine dissolved them in sterile water, put them in a medicine bottle and told me to give her .25ccs three times a day by syringe.
So when it came time to do that I made sure I had something good and tasty standing by to wash down the nasties, scruffed her tight and inserted the syringe at the side of her mouth. I gave her the meds in two pushes. Then, just as she started thinking about gagging, I followed up with a syringe or a spoon full of baby food. You can use FerreTone or Furovite or anything else your fuzzy will take. 0.25cc's given in two pushes is not so much that she'll choke on it, but one needs to be careful nonetheless.
Call your vet and ask about dissolving the pills or ask him to do it for you. Maybe he can even switch to a liquid.
Good luck to you and I hope your fuzzy feels better soon."
Bad cavity an swollen jawPART2? Alright, so after I checked all your answer's I walked to the dentist ASAP. They gave me MORE antibiotics and told me that if it gets bigger then to go to the hospital to get I.V's put into me.
Should I wait and see or should I go to the hospital ASAP? The antibiotics they gave me are Amoxicillin[I take 1 three times a day] and Metronidazole[Take 2 three times a day] and I have to take them with food.
kiddentasst replied: "do just that. make sure that you take all of it and make an appointment ASAP with your dentist to get treatment on that tooth."
darparreo replied: "i would only give it a couple more days, then get the iv. the longer you wait, the more chance you have of an infection setting up in other parts of the body. then definitely get the tooth pulled or the root canal, cap, whichever the dentist suggests. dont know if you drink or not, but make sure not to drink any alcohol while you are on metronidazole, you will get terribly sick if you do. good luck."
bootzey replied: "Why didn't they do an (I&D) incision and drainage? It is a procedure that is out of fashion these days, but it works in conjunction with the antibiotics. I have done many of these and have always had good results."
Worms, Allergy Or? Recently, I've been under treatment for high eosinophilia (28-36%), all other blood count are within range. Also, I been suffering from abdominal pains at various locations. Plus nauseous feelings whenever I take in food.
I've taken Mebendazole & Metronidazole but neither improve the situation.
My doc ran a few more blood tests and found out my Immunogloguline E (IGE) was high and thus ran some allegry test for me. The nurse screw up my stool test and I have to wait another 3 weeks for the results.
In the mean while, my doc gave me albendazole (400mg single dose) to try. It made me feel much better but only lasted for a day.
I'm tempted to get additional albendazole dose for the relieve, but I'm not sure if worms is really my case. Too painful and uncomfortable to think straight. Would like to seek some professional advice here.
Thanks in advance.
Have been on methylphenidate hydrochloride (concerta) for the past 2 years, vitamin suppliments and melatonin. All of which I've stopped taking for the past 2 months.
Blood pressure is normal. No other symptoms has surfaced yet.
Quintby replied: "A high eosinophilic count is almost by its nature involved with an allergic reaction. What concerns me is that your doctor seems focused solely on your intestines to the exclusion of other possibilities. What I'm thinking of is eosinophilic myocarditis, an allergic reaction of the outer muscle of the heart, the symptoms of which can be difficult to pin down but which can include nausea and pain in areas of the torso some distance away from the heart. I'm not saying this is a likelihood, but its consequences when left untreated make it a possibility which should not be completely ignored. You don't happen to be taking Provigil, are you? Or is your blood pressure unusually low or causing you to feel dizzy? If so, consider going to an ER."
Does my 6 month old maltese have giardia or maybe just a bad case of food poisoning? My poor little puppy threw up in the middle of the night on Tuesday night. He was very active the next day, but would throw up everything he ate and drank. I took him to an emergency vet after hours that evening and they ran some tests on him. The vet said he has giardia. I didn't know the symptoms of giardia until I did further research later. I explained to the vet that he was only vomiting, no diarrhea, no blood in stools, no pain in abdomen. He was given metronidazole and panacur. He was not able to hold anything down the first day he was taking his meds, but last night he was finally able to take his meds and food with out vomiting. I cleaned his area and found some remnants of crawfish shells near his bed. I'm wondering if he wasn't actually sick and it was a bad case of food poisoning. I didn't give my puppy crawfish. He must have gotten some scraps when we had crawfish on Tuesday evening. He's very lethargic this morning and I'm worried that he's taking meds for something he doesn't have.
He was tested negative for parvo.
Stalkers are cowardly thieves replied: "Giardia rarely presents w/any vomiting.....parvo does.
The correct treatment for giardia IS what you were given...ever considered it has BOTH????
duh"
grinninh replied: "If the vet diagnosed the dog with giardia you should feel confident the dog has the protozoa.
Giardia may be an incidental finding but the dog needs the panacur and metronidazole inorder to eliminate the giardia.
Its important that the dog gets retested for giardia to ensure it is gone as giardia is zoonotic which means humans can become infected.
You dog may of presented ill due to a dietary indescetion (the craw fish) but the medication fo giardia will not compromise recovery.
The metronidazole will actually help."
scots.angus replied: "Your vet probably did some testing to determine it was Giardia. So I think it is safe to say he is right. If a dog hasn't eaten much it is possible that they would not have the intestinal problems usually associated with the disease. The crawfish shells are troublesome though. You need to be especially careful to keep things out of dogs reach. I'm not sure about crayfish, but there are a lot of foods that we eat that can cause a lot of problems for our doggy friends. I would suggest that you ask your vet or find a comprehensive list of plants and foods that your dog should not eat. Post it on the inside of a cupboard door and teach everyone to check before they give puppy a treat other then commercial dog treats. I doubt that he was treated for something he didn't have, some of the tests that vets run for those sorts of things are done in the office and are very quick. A check under the microscope is all they need to determine if it is a parasite or not."
